# Embrace what you cannot accept. As a prisoner, you might not be able to control your job, bunk assignment, or days you can visit with the family. You can, however, control your attitude and your thinking about yourself, about others, and about your situation.

# Work on developing skills that will help you overcome the obstacles you will face upon release. If your conviction costs you the licenses to sell securities, you can develop a new skill set. Rather than complain about confinement, or spend all day in the TV room, work to develop my writing and communication skills.

# Find a win-win. Others in prison might not have had the same opportunities as you. Therefore, you might be in a position to help others benefit from your life experience. Teaching others and helping others obtain their GED, for example, can provide a great deal of meaning to your prison term and prepare you to succeed in life. This is a definite win-win.

# Act with moderation. Too many prisoners spend time on tasks that don’t relate to the life they want to lead after prison. It is a wonderful thing to exercise in prison, but it must be done in moderation. It must measured. Spending 12 hours walking the track is akin in many ways to watching TV all day. Both do little more than pass the time. Unless you are striving to become a professional athlete upon release, keep the exercise in check. Likewise, if you choose to watch TV, keep your program choices and viewing hours measured. An hour here or there is fine. If you find yourself, however, beholden to a TV schedule or watch the clock until the Kardashains come on, you are off track. Moderation will allow ample time for studying, exercising and relaxation.
